A man walked into alt.coffee, sporting sharp blue jeans, red/plaid golfers hat, bomber jacket with ny/hc patch, tight black t-shirt. even the read laces. Everything about him said neo-nazi, except he was black. It made me think.

Even now, 14 years after I went to my first show, when I see this type, I immediately look down at the laces. My jaw tightens, and I look for the racism that's about to come. Such a strange disconnect to see it on someone who is obviously not white power.

Later, a man met up with a girl. They planned on meeting there and introduced themselves. It was a clear first (blind?) date, and it was hard not to listen in. They seemed to like eachother enough -- they parted with the standard "nice meeting you." "see you sometime soon" "maybe friday?" As soon as the guy left, girl called her friend to process. Again, it was hard not to listen in. I found it difficult not to look over to see the expression on her face, that first judgement of the date.
